In the dry heat of the Finnish sauna (60 to 95 °C) and in the humid heat of the steam bath (45 to 50 °C) the temperature of the skin rises by about ten degrees and the whole body temperature rises by one to two degrees. The alternation between heat and the subsequent cooling down stimulates the circulation and the metabolism and cleanses the tissue of the skin and body. The blood thickens as a result of the sweating process. In order to compensate for this, water is transferred from the body tissue into the blood and with it the by-products of metabolism, heavy metals and contagious matter. These leave the body through the sweat glands and the kidneys.
