The Dolomites… the emblem of South Tyrol

The Dolomites continue to captivate their admirers with their unique play of colours: in the morning when the sun rises, they sparkle and in the evening when the sun goes down, they glow blazing red! In addition, soon they will be a UNESCO World Heritage Centre!

Dolomites… the home of the Ladins

Shielded from the outside world, the Ladin people have managed to preserve their heritage in the valleys of the Dolomites until the present day. The language is a mixture of Rhaeto-Romanic and Vulgar Latin and today it is spoken actively by around 18,000 people. The Ladins inhabit mainly the four valleys leading off the Sella: Gröden, Fassa, Buchenstein and Gad Valley.

The formation of the Dolomites

250 million years ago, the Adriatic and Eurasian plates collided with each other and pushed the coral reef that existed at that time in the ancient Tethys Sea upwards. That was when the Dolomites were born!

The different forms of the rock formations are interesting. The Schlern and Sella massifs have the form of mesas, or table mountains, spanned by elongated plateaus such as Seiser Alm. In contrast to these, there are the very craggy massifs such as the Drei Zinnen and the Rosengarten. These are caused by sections of rock, which have a volcanic origin. These weather more easily and create crags and rounded plains.

Experience the Dolomites

In the summer, you can explore the unusual mountain scenery by hiking and mountain climbing, by bike or motorbike and enjoy the vast view from mountain passes! In the winter, the white peaks offer the ideal backdrop for skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoe walking!
