Bruneck (or Brunico in Italian) is the main town in the holiday region of Kronplatz and the Puster Valley. The town, which is situated on the river Rienz, was founded in the 13th century and is at 840 metres above sea level. As the largest locality in eastern South Tyrol, Bruneck is the economic, political and cultural centre of the Puster Valley.

Highlights in Bruneck:
  • Bruneck Castle: On a hill above the town, the towering Bruneck Castle rises up majestically over everything, surrounded by a strong defence wall with towers and bastions. Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg commissioned the construction of the castle in the 13th century in order to protect his territories in the Puster Valley. Today, it is still owned by the Episcopal and inside the castle, there are numerous crests of the various bishops who have lived there during the course of its history.
  • MMM – Messner Mountain Museum: Reinhold Messner’s fifth museum is located in Bruneck Castle. Every year, guests from another mountainous region (e.g. Sherpas, Indios, Tibetans, Mongols, Hunza) spend the summer in the MMM and tell of their way of life. The Museum opened in July 2011.
  • The South Tyrol Museum of Folk Tradition is an open-air museum, whose two dozen original buildings call to mind and vividly depict past ways of life. The focal point of the museum is the Mair am Hof residence, built between 1690 and 1700. A lot of the furniture, work equipment and possessions draw you into the world of rural work. The old buildings on the open-air site, with their kitchens, parlours, sleeping chambers, barns and mills are probably the real experience.
  • House where Michael Pacher was born: visit the house where Michael Pacher was born, a prominent painter and sculptor in the Late Gothic period. Pacher is also the only artist from South Tyrol whose work can be found in the National Gallery.
  • Stadtgasse: The Stadtgasse is also the main shopping street in Bruneck. The houses on the Stadtgasse are quaint dwellings with old frescoes, interesting gable constructions and all kinds of shops.
  • City gates: Four city gates border the town: the Ragen gate in the upper part of town, the Ursulinen gate, the Rienz gate and the Floriani gate.
  • Farmers’ market: From June to October, there is a farmers’ market every Friday morning at the Graben. Farmers from the surrounding area sell vegetables, fruit, juices, corn, cheese, speck, meat, eggs, herb products, farmhouse bread and other produce from their farms.
  • Municipal Museum for graphic arts with works by Michael Pacher, Albrecht Dürer and numerous visiting exhibitions. In addition, there is an artists’ studio in the museum with facilities for intaglio, planographic and relief printing (etching - lithography - woodcut) and screen-printing. Amongst other things, the museum also owns 7,500 bookplates. The main focal point of the museum is the graphic art of the 20th century by regional and international artists. The second focal point is the restoration and exhibition of old pieces from the original municipal museum.
  • One of the most impressive sites in the town is the war cemetery. During the First World War, there were several battlefield hospitals in Bruneck, where many wounded and sick soldiers and prisoners of war died. There are also soldiers from the Second World War resting in peace here.
  • The culinary offer in the town is also exciting and praiseworthy. There are rustic inns, elegant restaurants, pleasant cafés as well as a number of gourmet shops, which offer typical South Tyrol specialities.
